Case Studies

Share pictures over the Internet using N2100 YES Box

Scenario :

Harry went to a class reunion. He took a lot of pictures for his old school buddies with his brand new digital camera, but sorting all the pictures and sent to every one of his friends is too much work for him. How can Harry share all the pictures in N2100 to other people over the Internet?

Equipments :

  • Thecus N2100 YES Box
  • Cable/DSL Router - Asus WL500g (I used Asus WL500g because it supports Dynamic DNS)
  • Home PC
  • Internet Connection

Network Settings :

  • N2100, PC both connected to the Router's LAN port.
  • WL500g's LAN is set up with 192.168.1.x segment.
  • N2100 is set up with fixed IP address : 192.168.1.100, which is the default IP address for the N2100.
  • PC is set up with DHCP.
  • ADSL Connection : PPPoE

Procedures :

I. Setup a DynDNS account

  1. Go to http://WWW.DYNDNS.ORG from your Home PC
  2. Click on Sign Up Now link
  3. Check the Check boxes, select a Username (ie: n2100), enter your email address (ie: xxx@example.com), check Enable Wildcard, and make up a password (ie: xxxx).
  4. Wait for email from www.dyndns.org
  5. Open the email and click on the link to activate your account

II. Enable DDNS function on WL500g (NOTE: Not all wireless routers support DDNS)

  1. Go to WL500g setup screen and select IP Config > Miscellaneous DDNS Setting from your Home PC
  2. Click on Yes for Enable the DDNS Client?
  3. Select WWW.DYNDNS.ORG
  4. Go to WL500g setup screen, and enter the following information
    A. User Name or E-mail Address : xxx@example.com
    B. Password or DDNS Key: xxxx
    C. Host Name: www.n2100.dyndns.org
    D. Enable wildcard ? Select Yes
    E. Update Manually : Click on Update button

III. Setting up Virtual Servers (HTTPS) on N2100 thru WL500g.

  1. Click on NAT Setting > Virtual Server menu item of the WL500g
  2. Enable Virtual Server? Select Yes
  3. Setting up HTTPS Server
    A. Well-Known Applications : Select User Defined
    B. Local IP : Enter 192.168.1.100
    C. Port Range : 443 (NOTE: 443 is the default HTTPs port setting on N2100)
    D. Protocol : Select TCP
    E. Click on Add button
    F. Click on Apply button
  4. Testing HTTPS connection from Other Computer on the Internet
    A. Open Internet Explorer, and enter https://www.n2100.dyndns.org
    B. You should see the login page of N2100.
    C. Click on the Gallery Icon to access the each user's album.
