N4800: “Original features”, N5550: “a NAS built to last”
Bookmark and Share

01/22/2013 – Both from the Vision series, the N4800 and the N5550 have been reviewed by many media and users from all four corners of the world. Equipped with an Intel® Atom™ CPU, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, USB 3.0, eSATA and HDMI connectivity, they caught the attention this time of the very popular online French media, In a comparison style review for the year 2012, Clubic had the opportunity to test the 4 and the 5 bay Thecus® NAS.

The design of the two NAS is exemplary, providing great connectivity for a various amount of devices and enabling great functionalities. For example, the eSATA and USB 3.0 ports allows for external drives to be connected to the N4800 or the N5550, thus extending the storage capacity or providing external back-up option. The double LAN ports of the two units can be used for link aggregation, giving you extra transfer speed. Here are a few comments from Clubic's editor:

“The back side of the N4800 reveals a very complete NAS... that has simply no equivalent in his price range. Firstly, the Thecus system extended the battery module to give the product a UPS aspect. The presence of an HDMI connection is probably the most surprising: it is to allow management of the NAS directly from a TV, for example! It goes without saying that the video playback takes a new dimension.”

“The fact remains that the manufacturer made the effort to properly organize the many features it incorporates in its software ... and it is not bad at all! Too often, we get lost in sub-menus or we seek in vain for an option in the wrong section: here, things are organized as clearly as possible. Particularly eloquent icons are there to remind the role of a certain function while the French localization brooks no criticism.”

And to conclude on the N5550: “Still, the N5550 offers appreciable extra performances, it is as always reassuring with its construction and its uncompromising interface includes all that we are entitled to expect from a modern NAS. A quality product.”
