The 6-bay NAS impresses the German media Hardwareluxx
Bookmark and Share

08/03/2012 – “Six disk slots, a Sandy Bridge processor, USB 3.0 and HDMI are a few facts that should make this device unique.” Definitely the N6850 enterprise NAS from Thecus® left a good impression at Hardwareluxx, the well-known German media specialized in IT. Going through the chassis design, looking at the hardware, playing with the UI and testing its performances, Hardwareluxx analyzed the N6850 from head to toe and gave it the “Excellent Hardware” award.

“The hardware is impressive: Sandy Bridge with 2.6 GHz plus a whopping two gigabytes of RAM. Even for the connections… many laptops have fewer interfaces.”

The N6850 is a high performance NAS design for enterprise needs offering great connectivity and upgradability. The N6850 features 8 USB ports (four USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 each), HDMI output and eSATA port to connect external devices. “You can install for example a Blu-Ray slim drive and burn backups directly to a disk. (Through the available PCIe slot) An additional PCIe network card can be added, for example, with a 10 Gigabyte Ethernet port. Overall, the complete hardware is very well thought out – it all fits together.”

Performance wise, the N6850 didn't let anybody down. As you can see in the chart below, the 6-bay NAS easily outperformed the competition for the 1GB (1000 files) read performance using Samba.

The resume of Hardwareluxx's review speaks for itself: “The N6850 TopTower plays in the upper class – the enterprise level. The integrated hardware is extremely powerful and, incidentally, even upgradeable. The build quality is also on a super high level. The energy consumption is always appropriate.”

“Overall, the N6850 TopTower is a very good device. The performance for file transfers can be just as impressive as the web interface. The unit is very well made, solid, smart and also upgradeable.”
