06/11/2014-Hardwareluxx has been around the German IT media landscape for a while now and has established itself as one of the institutions of excellence when it comes to IT product reviews. So when reviewing the Thecus N7710-G they had a clear objective: As this 7-bay NAS comes standard with a 10 Gigabit Ethernet-card, does it live up to its promise of providing a significant transfer-speed boost?
The Thecus N7710-G already impresses not only with its 10Gb Ethernet-card, but also with its other hardware: “The N7710-G definitely belongs in the NAS pro league. At its core is an Intel Pentium G850-processor from the ‘Sandy Bridge’ generation with 2x 2.9 GHz processors and support from 4GB ECC-DDR3-RAM… Connectivity-wise, the N7710-G offers two USB 2.0 ports at the front and four at the back alongside two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI-port and a VGA-port.”
Hardwareluxx didn’t compare the benchmark results with other similar NAS, as this one plays in a league of its own thanks to the 10Gb card: “Thanks to the 10 Gb Ethernet interface, the Thecus N7710-G has no direct competitor. As is visible from its name, it offers ten times more bandwidth than is possible with 1Gb interfaces.” And the benchmark results are as excellent as you’d expect:
What Hardwareluxx already noticed with other devices, has been confirmed with the Thecus N7710-G, is that benchmark-results speak for themselves. “With so many other devices, we noticed that they could potentially deliver better performance, but only if they had faster hardware interfaces. Thecus is providing that necessary speed boost with the 10Gb card and provides with it a whole new world of transfer-speeds.”
Andreas Gutsmann – Hardwareluxx’s NAS-editor – concluded his review with a useful contextualizing of the results: “ The Thecus N7710-G is definitely worth the money if you know how to use it. Looking at its direct competitors, it is far cheaper than all of them. Thunderbolt devices are not cheaper either, and they also have to be attached to the computer and can’t be attached to a network… Users who are looking for a 10Gbit-solution, and don’t want to build a server themselves, will find a very capable device in the N7710-G.”
Because of these and other reasons, the Thecus N7710-G earned Hardwareluxx’s Technology-Award!
Thank you Andreas and the rest of the Hardwareluxx team for the review.
