“A good way to dip your toes into the rising 10GbE tide”
Bookmark and Share

05/09/2014-With their release earlier this year, the Thecus N8810-G and N7710-G and their 10GbE connectivity set out to redefine the professional storage marketplace. Evaluating this ambitious goal is the first review for the N7710-G, published by Small Net Builder this week.

The Specs

An Intel® Pentium® G850 Dual Core CPU (clocked at 2.9GHz) and 4GB of DDR3 ECC RAM form the heart of the N7710-G, with “four more USB 2.0 ports for a total of six and there are two USB 3.0 ports,” “a built-in 10GbE port nestled into its single PCI-e slot, plus two aggregatable 1 Gigabit Ethernet ports” and “both HDMI and VGA ports for monitor attachment.”

The Performance

One would assume that with such impressive hardware powering the N7710-G that the device would be quite a drain; but thanks to impressive Thecus engineering, running the system with three drives installed brought total power consumption to 76W (and 43W when in idle mode).

iSCSI benchmarks by Small Net Builder showed the N7710-G made good use of the 10GbE connection's higher bandwidth, with write and read measurements on RAID 5 volumes coming in at “94 MB/s / 101 MB/s for 1 GbE and 256 MB/s / 248 MB/s for 10GbE.”

The Rankings

When all the tests were wrapped up, Small Net Builder sought to contextualize the 7-bay's results. While similarly priced NAS often marketed themselves as ‘10GbE Ready', solutions with such technology already embedded usually found themselves priced at over double the N7710-G's modest cost.

What is perhaps most impressive, however, is that amongst the 70 NASes featured on Small Net Builder's charts, the Thecus N7710-G came in top in 9 tests!

Thanks to Tim and everyone at Small Net Builder for the review.
